Together, we’ll explore the deep-rooted connections between Black communities and agriculture in the United States, emphasizing how enslavement and the subsequent loss of land have shaped today’s realities. Participants will be able to identify the challenges these communities currently face and investigate a forward-looking approach by defining the core principles of Black Food Liberation. Finally, we’ll consider practical steps for launching a Food Liberation project that fosters self-determination, equity, and resilience within Black communities and beyond. This will be part one in a series.

This workshop is hosted by Tarshire Battle, Founder and Executive Director of Roots 2Empower, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit that uses direct service, education, public policy, and community engagement to confront social injustice and advance equity in southern New England. Tarshire is a published author, herbalist, Master Gardener, artist, community organizer, farmer, entrepreneur, mother, and grandmother, and holds dual masters degrees in Public Administration from Northeastern University and in Mental Health Counseling from Boston University.
