About this photo: Tess Lavoie Brown is an urban market farmer in Providence’s West End. Tess, along with her sister, Laura, and childhood friend, Faye, started Sidewalk Ends Farm in the spring of 2011. On their 1/4 acre lot, they grow produce for a CSA and market sales with the Little City Growers Cooperative.
They also raise chickens, thanks to a landmark ordinance passed unanimously by the Providence City Council in the summer of 2010 after a grassroots organizing effort led by Southside Community Land Trust.
About this photo: In 2011, SCLT partnered with the International Institute to install a community garden at Greenwich Street in South Providence. This garden currently is being tended by sixteen immigrant families from places as distant as Bhutan and the Congo, all of whom now call Providence their home.
About this photo: Kids in South Providence have limited access to safe places to play, grow and imagine. SCLT’s Childrens Garden offers a magical oasis where neighborhood youth have a chance to get their hands dirty and fill their bellies with delicious produce they’ve grown themselves.
About this photo: Access to water is one of the biggest challenges our gardeners face. Here at Somerset Community Garden, SCLT has helped to install water barrels and hose lines so that gardeners like Godaliva can keep their vegetables growing strong. In addition, SCLT staff and garden leaders work closely with community growers to teach water conservation best practices, such as watering only in the morning or evening
